Culturally-based preferences and tendencies (CBTs) are:
  • Relevant to domestic organizations where members of a team with diverse communication and work styles must become more effective and leverage their different perspectives.

  • Relevant to multinational organizations where parts of the organization in specific different countries must collaborate well with each other and/or with customers to achieve business results.

  • About the culturally-dependent and culturally-influenced preferences and tendencies in patterns of thought and behavior of an individual, team, or entire organization. These preferences and tendencies span the five dimensions of Dr. Gert Hofstede's model of culture.

  • A "culture-specific" skill focusing on the effects of specific differences in CBTs between team members or the effects of differences in CBTs between people of specific national cultures. Developing skill in managing CBTs builds upon and leverages one's core intercultural competence.

Being aware of the nature and effect of CBTs is important for people who lead or work in diverse teams or organizations.

Within a diverse team, understanding the differences between members' individual CBTs is the basis for developing ways to work together effectively and actually harness these differences to improve team results.

In multinational teams or organizations, the same dynamic applies to the CBT differences present due to the many nationalities of the colleagues and customers.

This work is about developing deep understanding of CBTs, self awareness of one's own CBTs, and skill in leveraging CBTs.

CWQ is used with individuals, teams, and organizations. It is especially useful for people who:
  • Lead or work in diverse, cross-cultural domestic or global teams.

  • Must understand, meet the needs of, or serve very-diverse or global customers.

  • Lead global organizations.

  • Have supervisors or subordinates from countries other than their own.
